- The five continental champions will qualify automatically for the World Cup.
- The four runners-up with the highest FIVB ranking as of January 15, 2007, will also qualify for the World Cup.
- The remaining three teams in the 12-team World Cup will be host nation Japan, plus two wild cards selected by the FIVB and JVA/LOC.
- China will not take part in the World Cup as their men's and women's teams qualify automatically for the 2008 Olympic Games. Therefore, if China wins the Asian Championship, the runner-up will qualify for the World Cup as continental champion. If the runner-up is Japan, who qualify automatically for the World Cup as host, the third-placed team in the Asian Championship will qualify for the World Cup, and the fourth-placed team will be regarded as the runner-up.
